Aikido is the thinking person's Martial Art and gives both the physical and mental control
of a situation when under threat, allowing you to make the choice on how far it would be reasonable
to go when defending yourself.
Although a relatively new Martial Art, being created in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969),
Aikido is based on centuries-old principles from Jujutsu, sword and spear fighting.
The style practised at Colmers Farm is traditional post-war Aikido and emphasis is placed on
sword and stick, in addition to unarmed techniques.
- What should I wear to start?
- Something that does not restrict your movements: casual clothes or even a tracksuit.
- Will I have to join a formal organisation?
- Yes, for insurance purposes we would expect you to join the Aikido Fellowship of Great Britain,
but only when you have decided that Aikido is for you - usually 2-3 weeks in enough.
- Will I be expected to learn Japanese?
- The terminology is, of course, Japanese, but you are not required to learn it.
- What rules do I need to know about?
- Only Etiquette - good manners. For the first few weeks you will have a black belt to look after you and
guide you.
